Itinerary

Day 1 - Christchurch to Franz Josef

 

  • Travel over the famous Arthur’s Pass and down onto the West Coast. 
  • You will also visit Hokitika, famous for pounamu (jade) and the Bushman’s Centre to learn about local history. 
  • The day ends at Franz Josef to see the famous glacier.  We sleep in a rainforest lodge at Franz Josef. (D)

Day 2 – Full day at Franz Josef

 

  • The day is spent in Franz Josef, a World Heritage area.  As well as the glacier, the area is famous for its excellent walking trails. 
  • There are many great options but a highly recommended guided trip (own expense) will enable you to get closer to the glacier. 
  • Evening: self-catering; there are plenty of local cafes and restaurants to enjoy or make use of the self-catering kitchen.  (B)

Day 3 – Franz Josef to Makarora

 

  • You head down the coast towards Mount Aspiring National Park and along the way see some breathtaking scenery including Lake Matheson, NZ’s most photographed lake. 
  • Once you arrive at the National Park there’s plenty of time to enjoy some of its activities including walking, scenic flights or jet boating (own expense).  (B,D)

Day 4 – Makarora to Queenstown

 

  • Today you head to the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown.  Prior to arrival, you will visit Wanaka, a picturesque town, great for a spot of lunch. 
  • Soon after you head to Bungy Bridge to see where the adventure all started.  There’s no pressure, you can jump or watch and it’s up to you. 
  • Queenstown’s nightspots for the evening, often as lively as the bungy jump. (B)

Day 5 & 6  - Full Days Queenstown

  • Enjoy two FREE days to explore Queenstown. Optional activities and meals are at own expense.
  • Overnight accommodations included.

Day 7 – Queenstown to Doubtful Sound

 

  • Fiordland National Park, with its stunning scenery, is your first port of call today.  You board a purpose built boat and with the help of a nature guide you’ll see fur seals, penguins and dolphins.  
  • The night is spent on the boat, anchored within a secluded bay. (D)

Day 8 – Doubtful Sound to Central Otago

 

  • Depart the boat and head through the stunning Otago Region.  There are interesting relics of the gold rush to be enjoyed.  (B,D)

Day 9 – Central Otago to Rangitata

 

  • Enjoy an active start to the day on a mountain bike and ride parts of the Otago Gold Mining Trail.  The trail is fine for all levels of riding abilities. 
  • After, you’ll head to Rangitata, one of the oldest sheep stations within the region.  (B)

Day 10 – Rangitata to Christchurch

 

  • Express from Rangitata to Christchurch where you have the day to explore Christchurch further.

*open-aged, however, ideally suited to those between the ages of 18 – 35

*Departs Christchurch Thursdays at 9am

 

What to Bring:

  • Clothing: Sturdy walking shoes/boots, warm clothing, bathers/towel, hat & sunscreen, toiletries and waterproof jacket
  • Other: motion sickness tablets, water bottle, insect repellent and camera.
