Five Markets to Check Out in Northern Territory’s Outback

From Aboriginal artwork to food, produce and second-hand items like books, there are great places to pick up souvenirs when you’re in the Outback.  Often, these marketplaces give local vendors an opportunity to connect with thousands of travellers (and locals!) to sell their goods and services.  Here are some great markets to check out in Northern Territory.

1. Parap Markets – Fascinate your taste buds with the Parap Markets’ variety of authentic Asian cuisine every Saturday morning.  In addition to good eats, this is a great location for both local shoppers and visitors due to the market’s offering of local crafts, entertainment and more.  Catch the free shuttle from several Darwin city locations!

2. Mindil Beach Sunset Markets – Between May and October (the dry season), every Thursday and Sunday, you can enjoy a truly tropical delight!  With over 50 nationalities that live in Darwin, you can sample exotic national cuisines and flavours from around the world and enjoy your delicacy just as the gorgeous sun sets along the beach.

3. Palmerston Markets – Now we’ve got your Friday nights covered (during the dry season anyway).  This is a bargain-hunting zone, just outside of Darwin, where you can grab great souvenirs, arts and crafts, jewellery and so on.  This is also great as a family-friendly activity for its local bands, talent competitions and variety of entertainment.

4. Adelaide River Markets – This is a great marketplace for unique, local homemade crafts, cards and art as well as second-hand items such as books.  Held four days a week, this is an easy outdoor shopping experience to add to your Outback itinerary.

5. Desert Mob Marketplace – Drawing together Aboriginal art centres to sell a wide variety of painting, textile work, ceramics and the like, this event – occurring every September – draws in around 1,000 attendees and is considered to be one of the most important aboriginal cultural events of the nation.  The vibrant atmosphere provides an opportunity to buy central Australian artwork.
